Game Recap

While Florida braces for cat 5 hurricane Irma, Dock girls soccer team experienced its own hurricane, a cat 3 (as in 3-0) named New Hope. I don’t know whose idea it was to have the season opener against a league rival, but it sure did not work out in Dock’s favor. Or maybe the girls just wanted to sympathize with the boys, who dropped their league opener against New Hope by the same score the day before.

The season began with Dock starting four freshmen: Sara Kennel, Sammy Schmitt, Peyton Scialanca and Lauren Moatrmri. The rest of the line up was bolstered by returning veteran players: Mikayla Frederick, Abby Nice, Brooke Bozarth, Jaci Halteman, McKenzie Swartely, McKenzie Gordon and Audrey Schweizerhof, in goal. Assisting the team this year is Dock alumni Shea “Crash” Neal (not sure who she is, just take a look at the Athletic Awards wall just outside Clemens gym). Both teams looked rusty in the first half, with play setting the game back a hundred years. Neither team keeping possession for any length of time, it quickly turned into a Benny Hill of a game. Dock did show some promise early on, pressing the attack and getting deep into New Hope territory on several occasions. But technique and timing was lacking at the most opportune moments.

New Hope had only two opportunities to score in the first half, but they made one of them count. Having slipped past Docks rear guard, New Hope’s Shayna Berman struck a shot like it was hit with a Callaway X-L driver, just under the cross bar for New Hope’s first goal of the game.

The second half was started much like the first, but New Hope gradually gained the advantage. With Dock’s midfield appearing to be on a vision quest to save the world, New Hope found a lot of room in front of Dock’s back line. This put the back four and keeper Schweizerhof under a lot more pressure then the first half, with the overtime effort costing Dock two more goals. New Hope generated eight attempts on goal to Dock’s two.

It was quite evident this was the first game of the season, with neither team showing much organization or skill and players not conditioned to go forty minutes. With only fifteen players on the roster, the depth chart is very thin. This team needs to get into game shape and the freshmen grow up quickly if they are to find success this season. There is a saying in the soccer world, that “he who wins the most 1v1 battles, wins the game.” Dock will score goals this year, no doubt. But defending well enough to win the game is a skill they will need to improve on.
