On the first day of spring, which happened to be a cold and crisp night, the Pioneers lacrosse team opened up their season against non league Upper Perk on Pioneers home field. Pioneers lost nineteen to one, but many positive things the pioneers did in the game as the night went on.
Pioneers lone scorer was captain Senior Abby Mellinger, who also had five offensive shots, five draw control possessions and four strong stick tackles to gain possession of the ball. Pioneers also had offensive shots from Junior Jenna Detweiler with three and Sophomore Emerson Gruver with two shots and Sophomore Sophie Veltre with an offensive shot and a draw control possession. Attackers Captain Senior Tess Bergey, Junior Lily Hunsberger, Sophomore Claudia Fernandez, and Freshman Mary Ellen Picariello also contributed to team on both sides of ball.
Pioneers as a team collected twenty seven ground balls. Strong play from defenders Captain Senior Olivia Veltre who also had an eight meter offensive shot, Junior Amanda Moyer, Sophomore Ava Dunn, Freshman Maddie Gendron, Brielle Bauman, and Daniella Slater Miller (also her birthday today!) In goal, Freshman goalie Mady Pustay had seven saves and Junior Samantha Anderson had one save.
We are looking forward in the future to the return of Senior Maddie Churches and Sophomore Aubrey Clemmer as they are recovering from injuries. Special thank you to Savannah Sobetsky for braving the cold night and doing an excellent job at scorebook.
Pioneers are looking forward to next opponent, March 20, Wednesday, away against non league opponent Upper Merion.
