Pioneers set 24 records at districts; 4 qualify for state meet The Dock track and field teams exceeded all reasonable District 1 AA Championship expectations that could have been set when the season began. The Pioneers will send four athletes to the state championships after winning five events on Saturday at districts. Only event champions in the AA division receive automatic berths in the state championships. Bobby-Jo Dodds won the girls 100-meter hurdles and 300-meter hurdles as well as the triple jump. Liv Moyer took gold in the girls 3,200-meter run. Micah Mast won the boys pole vault. Also on Friday, Olivia Mozzone won the girls pole vault, but the event has a minimum height to compete in states and that will be the goal for future years for the freshman. Sophia Veltre will compete in the girls triple jump at states after Dodds conceded her qualifying spot to the freshman, who finished second in triple jump. The Dock girls placed second in the team standings with 134 points, trailing only Delaware County Christian’s 162 points. The Dock boys tied for third place with Calvary with 76 points. Delco scored 79 points for second place, and Church Farm School won with 122 points. Both teams celebrated 24 best times or distances between them. Dock teams second, third at BAL Championships After the first day of the Bicentennial Athletic League Championships, the Dock track and field program honored its six seniors on Senior Night. The three girls and three boys missed out on a spring season as freshmen due to the pandemic, were part of title-winning teams as sophomores (girls and boys) and juniors (boys), and in their final meet at the Dock track, they were among the top performers in the entire meet while leading their young teams to podium finishes in the BAL meet that wrapped up after a second day of competition Thursday. A league-wide roar of approval went up when Bobby-Jo Dodds was named the girls meet Most Valuable Track Athlete after contributing a meet-high 32 points with three individual gold medals and a relay silver medal. Ainsley Moyer posted the second highest points total of any girls athlete in the field events with 24 points, including a gold in girls javelin. Hurt all year, Celeste Derstine anchored the winning 4x800 relay, was part of the second-place 4x400 relay and fought to win a scoring place in the 800 meters by one-hundredth of a second. The girls finished second behind Delaware County Christian. The Dock girls scored 151 points, 41 behind Delco, and 71 better than third-place Phil-Mont Christian. Micah Mast was tied for the most points won on the boys side overall with 26 after winning gold in the pole vault and silver in two hurdles events. Daniel Ringenberg tied for third overall among all boys in the meet by contributing 24 points with a silver, bronze and two fourth-place individual finishes while taking on the three longest distance running events. CFS won with 181 and Delco’s boys had 106. Fourth-place Calvary Christian scored 59 points. Wednesday had more field events contested than track events. Mast and Ringenberg went 1-2 in the boys pole vault. Mast cleared 12-feet while Ringenberg got over 9-feet. Olivia Mozzone won the girls pole vault when she cleared 6-feet. Dodds earned her first gold of the meet when she won the girls triple jump by eight inches. She jumped 32-feet-½, a season’s best. The Unionville Invitational gave the Dock track and field team another challenging environment in which to compete. With most of the Pioneers’ competition coming from big schools, the goals were time oriented more than place, though athletes had the chance to compete on a more equal footing within their seeded heats and flights. Sophia Veltre walked away with a silver medal, the result of a 34-feet-0 measurement in the girls triple jump. The freshman was the lone Dock athlete to medal in the outdoor meet that had competitors from Pennsylvania, Delaware and New Jersey. Veltre also competed in discus and reached 67-feet-1½ in her first time competing in it. While the rest of the team worked through a misty morning on the Unionville campus, Micah Mast was pushing into the record books at Philadelphia Jumps Club, where the top pole vaulters in the meet relocated for safer conditions indoors. The senior cleared 12-feet-6 for a new personal best and jumped to third in the Dock all-time record books behind Evan Scott and Cole Rupert who are tied at first at 13-6. Mast and Veltre were just part of another parade of bests for Pioneer athletes. Drew Bauman lowered his season best in the boys 300-meter hurdles to 45.10 seconds. In the girls 300 hurdles, Olivia Mozzone lowered her top time to 59.60 seconds. Maddie Afanador battled through a hamstring strain to run 1:03.91. Earlier, Bauman was just off his season best with an 18.43 time in the boys 110 hurdles. Mozzone improved to a personal-record 21.45 seconds and Afanador came in just behind in a best of 21.51 seconds in the girls 100 hurdles. Mozzone established a best of 12-feet-10 in the girls long jump and Afanador jumped a best of 12-5. Jayden Waters reached out to 16-feet-11½ in the boys long jump. Alex Kostler jumped 15-6. Matthew Mast hit a new personal best of 32-feet in the boys triple jump. Myles Johnson finished with a 30-feet-½ effort. Bauman threw 86-8 in the boys javelin. Gretchen German posted a mark of 66-2 in the girls javelin. Roman Kurian and Johnson competed in the boys 100 meters. Kurian ran 13.27 and Johnson clocked 13.75 seconds. The 1,600 meters had a couple divisions based on seed times. In the novice girls, Ceara Barnes dropped more than 10 seconds to finish in 6:19.52. Mikey Pustay ran a personal-record 5:17.27 in the boys novice race. In the open girls 1,600, Sadie Bernd dropped her season best to 5:53.78 with Liv Moyer just behind in 5:54.58. Daniel Ringenberg lowered his PR to 4:54.15 in the open boys 1,600 meters. Barnes returned later in the meet to post a 1:09.17 time in the girls 400 meters as part of a strong workout day for her. German moved up to the No. 4 ranking in District 1 AA girls 800 meters when she ran a personal best of 2:38.60. Celeste Derstine made her season debut in the event and hit 2:42.93 while still working through shin splints. In the boys 800, Ringenberg clocked 2:14.35 and Josh Frederick hit a new best of 2:30.35. Waters ran a personal best of 25.33 for the boys 200 meters. Kostler just missed a new PR with a 26.08 finish. The girls 4x400 completed the day with a 4:45.02 finish with Barnes overtaking another runner at the finish line by four-hundredths of a second. German led off with a 1:10 split, Bernd hit 1:12, Moyer ran 1:13 and Barnes ran 1:08. The Pioneers face a busy week ahead. Dock will compete at Interboro in a BAL regular-season meet. Track & Field sets 27 records in Armstrong Invitational  Led by the record marks of a quintet of seniors, the Dock track and field team had a strong showing to start a stretch of major invitationals that will lead into the postseason. They met the challenge of strong competition from athletes from larger schools at the Jack Armstrong Invitational at Abington High on Friday and it resulted in 27 records for Pioneer athletes. Bobby-Jo Dodds took the top spot in the District 1 AA rankings in all three events she entered. Dodds took nearly a full second off her personal record when she ran 17.14 seconds in the preliminary round of the girls 100-meter hurdles. She showed it was no fluke with a 17.71 clocking that still bettered her old PR as she came in sixth. Dodds finished even higher in the 300 hurdles. She came within three-tenths of a second of the state qualifying mark as she took second place in 47.96 seconds. In her lone field event of the day, Dodds was third in the girls triple jump with a 31-feet-7 effort. Ainsley Moyer earned the silver medal in the girls discus when she improved her own season best to 91-feet-9, within four feet of her all-time best. Drew Bauman was two places behind Mast in the boys 100 hurdles. He lowered his personal best in the event to 18.12 seconds. Daniel Ringenberg was also in the boys pole vault competition and placed 10th with a new personal record clearance of 9-6. Ringenberg dropped almost eight seconds off his personal best in the boys 800 to finish 12th in 2:12.97, a top-six time in the district, and that came after he’d already run 4:58.25 for 11th in the boys 1,600 meters. Outside of the record-setting seniors were also a plethora of other bests with newer athletes showing significant improvements across the board. Luke Smeland, a sophomore, set three personal bests. Putera Invitational honors coach   Tom Putera volunteered his time to coach Dock track and field since 2018. A record-setting high jumper, he was generous with his time and his advice. He didn’t help only the Dock athletes with whom he built warm relationships. He offered insightful pointers to any athlete in the Bicentennial Athletic League, and was a friend to coaching peers. The Tom Putera Field Events Invitational was held Tuesday night in honor of the coach and Dock father, who passed away suddenly in October 2022 from a heart infection. After threatening weather forced the postponement of the Putera Invitational from its original date Saturday, it was held concurrently with Distance Night at Dock. On hand were his wife, Becky, and daughters Halle and Sydney, along with coaches and athletes to recognize and remember Putera’s contributions to the sport. In addition to working with high jumpers, Putera also assisted with the pole vault – Sydney was a two-time District 1 champion – and he would have been thrilled to see Micah Mast win the boys event with a jump of 11-feet, and a newcomer, Olivia Mozzone, clear 6-feet for the girls division. Ainsley Moyer was second in the girls discus with a season-best and District 1 qualifier of 85-feet-7. She was also second in the javelin with a throw of 78-1. The senior captain took fifth in the girls shot put at 24-10. Gretchen German threw a new best of 70-1 for fourth in the girls javelin. German threw 20-feet-5¾ in shot put and competed in discus as well. Mozzone was third in the girls long jump with a 12-feet-5½ effort. Maddie Afanador was fifth with a PR of 12-feet-½. Drew Bauman hit a season-best 106-3 in the boys javelin. Luke Smeland threw a best of 98-feet, and Josh Frederick topped his best with a throw of 82-10. Micah Mast threw 73-9 in a new event for him. Smeland threw 21-9¾ in the boys shot put. A trio of freshmen competed in the boys triple jump. Jayden Waters jumped 31-1, Myles Johnson hit 30-2 and Matthew Mast reached 30-1. Waters had a new best in the boys long jump of 16-feet-7.

Rain Can't Dampen Relays Results The Dock track and field teams danced to promising times between the rain drops in the first BAL Track Relays at Bristol on Monday. It was another chance to see where best the team’s newcomers can help. Highlighted by a big comeback in the boys 4x100, convincing wins in the girls 4x800 and 4x400, and strong efforts all-around, the Pioneers left happy with the progress shown. The meet began with Maddie Afanador and Olivia Mozzone getting their first chance to compete in the girls 300-meter hurdles. Both runners in the relay meet competed together with their combined time going toward the team finish. Afanador ran 1:02.94 and Mozzone was less than a tick behind in 1:03.58 as they placed third overall. Micah Mast teamed with his brother, Matthew, for the boys 300 hurdles team. Micah ran the top time of the day, 45.71 seconds, and Matthew ran 52.75 in his first time competing in the event to help the Pioneers win the event. The girls placed fifth in the 4x100 relay. Mozzone and Afanador came right off the hurdles race to combine with Gretchen German and Sophia Veltre to run 59.85 seconds while cleaning up the baton exchanges that had been an issue in the season’s first scrimmage. The boys entered a pair of 4x100 relays. The relay of Luke Smeland, Jayden Waters, Drew Bauman and Micah Mast stormed back to win the event by less than three-tenths of a second in 48.09 seconds. Their relay team of Roman Kurian, Josh Frederick, Myles Johnson and Matthew Mast ran 53.66 seconds. The girls 4x800 saw the Pioneers win handily while using a newcomer with three veteran runners. First-year member Ceara Barnes led off in 2:50 to give Dock a big lead, Sadie Bernd ran 2:50, Liv Moyer clocked 2:47 and Bobby-Jo Dodds finished in 2:37 for an overall time of 11:05.39. The boys 4x800 saw a pair of seniors and a pair of freshmen combine for fourth place. Daniel Ringenberg led off in a personal-best 2:13 and fellow senior Drew Bauman followed with a 2:30 leg, Josh Ohm ran 2:31 and Michael Pustay anchored in 2:44 for a total time of 9:58.57. The relays meet allowed the league to run a special 4x200 event that is not in usual meet competitions. Mozzone, Afanador, Veltre and Toni Phillips placed sixth in the girls top race in 2:17.12. The boys 4x200 of Matthew Mast, Kurian, Johnson and Waters finished fourth in 1:52.23. The final event of the meet was the traditional 4x400 relay. Dock put together a pair of girls teams and a pair of boys teams to end the day. The same foursome that won the 4x8 of Barnes (1:09), Bernd (1:13), Moyer (1:11) and Dodds (1:04) won in 4:38.43. Veltre (1:09) and German (1:11) combined with the busy duo of Afanador (1:21) and Mozzone (1:22) ran 5:05.96. Micah Mast nearly brought the 4x400 boys back for another thrilling win. The Pioneers team of Bauman (:60), Waters (:59), Ringenberg (:58), and Mast (:55) ran 3:56.87 for second place. Kurian, Frederick, Ohm and Smeland fought through strong rain to finish the meet in 4:19.73. The Pioneers will look for more strong efforts and get a chance to compete in jumps and throws when they head to Upper Moreland High for the John Heinz Invitational on Friday.
