Mike Fergus – Boys’ Basketball Head Coach
Building on his 500th win – Dock defeat of Sankofa Academy (15-16 season), Coach Fergus has just finished his 41st year of coaching
Longevity and success have marked the excellent career of Coach Mike Fergus. As a high-school basketball player at State College High School, Coach Fergus lettered all 4 years, was captain, earned All-League honors, and was named League MVP his senior year. Also that year, he set the single season scoring record for his high school. He began his college play at Indiana University of PA and transferred to Penn State (University Park) and walked on his junior year.
Teamwork, conditioning, and fundamentals – especially defensive – are emphasized as he coaches. These basics of his philosophy were inspired by coaches Coach Fergus played under and worked with.
Before his 2014-15 inaugural season at Dock, Coach Fergus coached for 33 years in a variety of high schools and colleges including Houston Lee High School, State College High School, North Penn High School, Houston Baptist University (Division 1), and Delaware Valley University (Division 3). He has taken teams to conference, league, and district championships as well as making state playoff appearances. In 2012, he was named to the Pennsylvania Hoops website Coaches Hall of Fame. He has one over 100 games at three different high schools and continues to build on milestone career wins. Coach Fergus finds his most rewarding statistic to be that over 40 former players have gone on to be basketball coaches.
Coach Fergus continues to add to his 37 years of teaching Physical Education and Health. He has four adult children and enjoys reading – especially history, music, and fitness – especially running.
