Dock made the ride in the heat of the day back to Bensalem High School to play in the first round of the Boys Volleyball State Tournament. Perhaps the hot bus ride slowed the boys a bit in the first set. The set, while never seeming to be in Jeopardy, ended much closer than the Dock Boys and coaches felt it should be. Dock held a 7 point lead at 20-13 but Berwick would make a 7-2 run to bring the score to 22-20. Strong serving by Ryan Class and a kill by Lincoln Bergey would end their run and the first set.
Between sets the Dock squad regrouped and discussed adjustments that needed to be made. The plan worked as Dock cruised to an easy win in set two which featured Dock’s trademark scrappy defense and quick transition into the offensive attack.
Set 3 Dock was able to see some playing time for some of their younger players. The experience will hopefully build the confidence of the team of the future.
Dock’s defensive game was led by Connor Derstine with 14 digs, Lincoln Bergey with 12 digs and Jaden Hunsberger with 10 digs. Hunsberger also had 4 aces. Sam Gingerich had a solid all around game with 2 blocks, , 4 digs, 2 aces and 5 kills. Lincoln Bergey connected offensively to lead the team 16 kills and 4 aces. Jeremy Yoder kept the attack coming from multiple angles and tallied 31 assists to 7 different hitters.
Dock moves on to the second round of States where they will face Northeast Alliance, the State Champs for the last 5 years consecutively, time and place to be determined. Dock lost to the same team last year in the second round of States. The guys welcome the challenge, they have wanted this rematch since losing to them last year.
Dock’s overall record now stands at 16-4.
